  1. Using aliases, files or folders can be synchronized all at once even when they are not grouped into a single folder.

  3. An alias is a document which points to a file or folder located elsewhere. Use "Make Alias" in the File menu of the Finder (System 7 only) to create an alias.

  5. When the "Resolve aliases" option is checked in the Options menu, an alias of a file or folder will be treated as if it were the original file or folder that the alias points to.

  7. Example: You want to synchronize a document which must exist in the Preferences folder 窶” we'll call it "Prefs".

  9. 1. Create a folder for your synchronization aliases 窶” we'll call it "Sync Folder". This folder will contain aliases for the files and folders you want to synchronize.

  11. 2. Make an alias to the "Prefs" document and place it in your "Sync Folder".
  12.  
  13. 3. Make sure that you have a "Sync Folder" on your other Mac 窶” with an alias to the "Prefs" document on that Mac.

  15. 4. Use "New" from the File menu to create a new setup. Select the two folders on  your two Macs.
  16.  
  17. 5. Make sure that "Resolve Aliases" is checked in the Options menu. Save the document.

  19. 6. When the synchronization starts, the "Prefs" document is synchronized, even though it is actually within the Preferences folder.
  20.  
  21. Folders can be synchronized, regardless of their location, by using aliases in the same way.

  23. There is one restriction: in order to be synchronized, the original file or folder must exist on the same disk as its alias.
